What people use it for

Why the safe area matters

YouTube shows channel art differently on a TV, a desktop, a tablet and a phone. A TV shows the full 2560 by 1440 image. A phone shows only a wide strip across the middle. That strip is the safe area, 1546 by 423 pixels, and anything important has to sit inside it.

Put your channel name, logo and tagline in the safe area, and use the rest of the image for background that can be cropped away.

Requirements

YouTube recommends uploading at 2560 by 1440 pixels. The minimum is 2048 by 1152 and the file must be under 6 MB. These numbers come from YouTube's help pages and from creator guides at the time of writing.

How YouTube crops channel art

YouTube shows the same banner differently on each device. A TV shows the full 2560 by 1440 image. A desktop shows a wide band across the middle. A tablet shows a little less, and a phone shows only the central strip. That strip, 1546 by 423 pixels, is the safe area, and it is the only part you can rely on being visible.

Designing around the safe area

Put your channel name, logo and any short tagline inside the safe area, with space around them. Use the rest of the image for a background that still looks good if it is cropped away. On desktop, the channel icon and link buttons overlap the lower part of the banner, so keep those corners clear.

Troubleshooting

My banner is cropped on my phone

Phones show only the safe area. Move your text and logo into the centre 1546 by 423 pixels.

YouTube rejects the file

It may be under the 2048 by 1152 minimum or over 6 MB. The resizer exports 2560 by 1440 and fits the size limit.

The text looks fuzzy

Start from a larger image, and use PNG for sharp text if it fits under 6 MB.
