MP4 to MP3

Pull the soundtrack out of a video you own and save it as an MP3. It runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

Extract the audio from a video file as an MP3. Use it to publish a podcast version of a video, share a voice recording or keep the sound of an interview. Runs on your device.

How to use

  1. Add your video. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or other video file into the tool.
  2. Choose the quality. Pick a bitrate. 192 kbps is a good balance for speech and music.
  3. Extract. Press the button. Audio extraction is quick even for long videos.
  4. Download the MP3. Listen to the preview and download it.

What people use it for

Good uses for extracted audio

Turning an interview or talk into a podcast episode, sending a voice message from a recording, checking audio levels in a separate player, or saving a voiceover you recorded as video. Use it only on audio you own or have permission to use.

Bitrate guide

128 kbps is fine for speech. 192 kbps suits most music and mixed content. 320 kbps is the maximum for MP3, and only worth it if the source audio was high quality to begin with, because a bitrate cannot add detail that was never there.

MP3, M4A or WAV?

MP3 plays everywhere and is the safe choice. M4A with AAC audio is usually a little smaller at the same quality and works on phones and most players. WAV is uncompressed, so the files are large, but nothing is lost, which suits editing. If the audio in your video is already AAC, M4A can often be created without any quality loss, because the stream is copied rather than re-encoded.

Choosing a bitrate

For speech, 128 kbps sounds clean and keeps files small. For music or mixed audio, 192 kbps is a good balance, and 256 or 320 kbps are the high end. A higher bitrate cannot add detail that was not in the original, so there is no point picking 320 for a quiet phone recording.

Troubleshooting

The audio is silent or very quiet

The video may have no audio track, or the track is very low. Play the video first to check. A silent source gives a silent file.

It fails on a large file

Files over about 500 MB can exceed browser memory. Trim the video first, or use a desktop tool.

The sound is out of sync when I reuse it

An extracted audio file starts at the beginning of the video. If you add it back to the picture, align it at the very start.

Limits and good to know

FAQ

Is it free?

Yes, with no account, no watermark and no limit.

Does it download audio from YouTube?

No. It only works on files you already have on your device.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser.

What bitrate should I pick?

128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for most music, 320 kbps only for high quality sources.

Does it lower the audio quality?

Converting to MP3 compresses the sound a little. At 192 kbps or higher the difference is hard to hear for most content.

Can I convert audio I did not record?

Only use audio you own or have permission to use.
